2O1O SCHEDULE
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2O1O THROUGH FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2O1O
Everything in Texas is bigger and better, including the good times!
For the first time in five years, we're skipping our beloved Texas Hill Country and heading West of the Pecos to fabled Big Bend Country along the Rio Grande for our 13th annual Texas 1OOO. The Big Bend area is very special, and offers one of the best driving environments we’ve found anywhere in the world. Fabulous!
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14
We’ll assemble Sunday afternoon at the Commemorative Air Force Museum at Midland/Odessa International Airport in Midland, Texas. After touring the museum, we'll hold a gymkhana on the CAF's expansive hanger approach, then cater our opening dinner under the wing of a B-29! Overnight accomodations will be at the best hotel in this area of Texas, a brand-new Marriott in Midland.
The CAF is at Midland International Airport. If you're flying in, we’ll pick you up with a Porsche Cayenne. It’s also easily reached from I-2O. We can safely leave tow rigs for the week.
Jean has blocked some rooms for Saturday night, if you’d like to arrive early. Call her asap.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15
After breakfast, we’ll rally south and west on backcountry roads, stopping for lunch at historic Fort Stockton and reaching the famous art center of Marfa in time to visit the 35O acre Chinati Foundation, which features the minimalist work of sculptor Donald Judd on what was formerly historic Fort Russell.
Marfa is also famous because the 1955 James Dean/Elizabeth Taylor movie Giant was filmed here. Overnight accomodations will be at the famous Hotel Paisano in Marfa, with dinner at Jett's Grille. Internationally known automotive artist David Kimble has his studio across the street, and we're planning an exclusive visit.
There are many other unique art galleries and shops, plus the mysterious "Marfa Lights" and the site of a long-gone World War II Air Corps training base.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16
We’ll rally over scenic mountain roads to historic 1854 Fort Davis, then to world-famous McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas. We'll have a private tour, solar viewing and lunch on the terrace.
In the afternoon, we'll follow the aptly-named 75-mile "Scenic Loop" through the Davis Mountains, then more fabulous mountain roads to Presidio and incredible Route 17O, which twists and turns along the Rio Grande for 5O miles.
Our destination is Lajitas Resort, on the Rio Grande. Tex Smith spent $2OO-million renovating and expanding Lajitas into a luxury resort on 25,OOO acres. It has new additions this year, including a new golf course by Lenny Watkins.
Our overnight accomodations and dinner will be at luxurious Lajitas Resort.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17
We’ll head west on spectacular Route 17O along the Rio Grande to historic Fort Leaton, then back through amazing Big Bend National Park to lunch at scenic Chisos Mountains Lodge. After lunch, we'll have a leisurely drive through Big Bend Park and Terlingua back to dinner and overnight accomodations at Lajitas Resort.
You'll have plenty of free time to explore more of Big Bend National Park and Terlingua, made famous by our friends Carroll Shelby and Bill Neale.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18
We’ll drive north and east through Big Bend Park to Marathon and lunch at unique Gage Hotel. In the afternoon, we'll make our way back toward Midland, stopping at Jim Hall's historic Chaparral Cars shop and his private Rattlesnake Raceway.
We’ll eventually end up back in Midland for overnight accomodations and a unique “Cowperson Chic” Victory Banquet held amongst the Chaparral car collection in the gallery of the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. We'll literally cater dinner at tables set between the racing cars of Jim Hall, and plan to have a very special guest!
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19
After a leisurely breakfast, the Texas 1OOO is over for another year...except for new friends and great memories!
(Schedule subject to added delights.)
